Somali Youth & Family Club 2017 Award Recipients!

In the evening of Friday May 5th and during the 10th Anniversary of the Club, Hamdi Abdulle made a surprise announcements of the recipients SYFC’s 2017 Breaking Barrier, Artist, and Community Ambassador Awards. The Awards which were highly decorated have gone to 3 individuals who were all in attendance in the well-organized event at Marriott Seattle Airport. A brief press release Runta has received from the
SYFC said, “The Board of Somali Youth and Family Club is honored to announce the recipients of These individuals are authentic agents of change in social justice and equity through Human Service, Arts, and Volunteerism in South King County.” SYFC congratulated in the release to the award recipients for their dedication and commitment to service!

Breaking Barrier Award recipient- Mark Putnam “All Home”

The Breaking Barrier Award recognizes community members that have demonstrated selfless acts to push boundaries and promote social equity. Through Mr. Putnam’s leadership, authentic stories of our vulnerable community members were published and shared with the media. His work to make homelessness rare, brief, and one time has made a tremendous impact on the refugee and immigrant community. Mark has dug deep to strike out against injustice. His moves sent a ripple of hope bringing the voices of the affected voiceless communities to the decision-making tables of King County.

Artist Award recipient- Mohamed ShSYFC Awards 2idane

 

The Artist Award recognizes community members that can express a message across cultures. Mr. Shidane is committed to promoting Somali culture through art. Mr. Shidane is a well-respected community member, he advocates for the oppressed in the Horn of Africa “I will never stop fighting for the ones of my people who don’t have voices of their own,” Shidane says. “I’ll be a voice for the voiceless.”

Community Ambassador Award recipient- Hussein Addow

SYFC Awards 3Hamdi Abdulle is awaiting to hand over the award to Hussein Addow while Fathia Absiye, a journalist and film-maker is reading short bio of Hussein and why he deserved the award

The Community Ambassador Award recognizes community members that have demonstrated leadership through service and a tireless effort to shed light on inequities. Mr. Addow demonstrates what it means to be a true community leader through his advocacy efforts to end people living in substandard housing in South King County. His commitment to others and compassion is unsurpassed.

Friday’s event which was successfully organized brought together members of community, public figures such as Congressman Adam Smith, and representatives of many different organizations that serve in the Seattle area. The Youth members of the Club opened the event with three beautiful cultural dances and Somali music. It was overall a great uniting event which filled every member’s heart with love and happiness. Hamdi Abdulle, in the blue veil, is the Executive Director of the Somali Youth and Family Club and no doubt has demonstrated extraordinary leadership in that event.
