Doctors: Climate Change is Already Making America’s Kids Sicker

A coalition of medical organizations representing over half of American physicians launched a campaign yesterday to alert policymakers and the public to the dangers climate change presents to public health.

“Doctors in every part of our country see that climate change is making Americans sicker,” says Dr. Mona Sarfaty in a statement.

Safarty is director of a new coalition of doctors, called the Medical Society Consortium on Climate & Health, and a professor at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. “Physicians,” she says, are on the frontlines and see the impacts in exam rooms. What’s worse is that the harms are felt most by children, the elderly, Americans with low-income or chronic illnesses, and people in communities of color.”

The Consortium on Climate and Health’s new report, which is based on peer-reviewed reports, outlines the myriad ways climate is already worsening health, including causing asthma and other respiratory diseases.

The increased spread of insect-borne diseases such as the Zika virus and Lyme disease more commonly found in the tropics is another risk, the report says.

Seven in 10 Americans believe that climate change in happening, according to the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication. But just over a half of Americans believe that climate change is already harming not only public health but others areas as well. This is where physicians can play a role, says Dr. Aparna Bole, a pediatrician at University Hospital of Cleveland, Ohio.

“There is great consensus in scientific, public health and medical literature that acting on climate change is one of the greatest, if not the greatest, public health opportunities of our time,” Dr. Bole says. “As a pediatrician I am interested in safeguarding the health of all children. In order to that, safeguarding a healthy environment is critical.”

Children are among the most vulnerable to the health impacts of climate change, she says, partly because their respiratory rate is faster than that of adults, making them susceptible to poor air quality. Increased risks for infectious disease and extreme weather can be even more damaging when they happen in the critical developmental years.

“The WHO (World Health Organization) estimates that 80 percent of the health burdens of climate change will fall on children under [age] five,” Dr. Bole says.

Asthma tops the list of climate health woes in many communities already suffering in disproportionate rates, such as in Cleveland where one in every five African American child has asthma. Many of these children are Dr. Bole’s patients, and in caring for them she says she is already observing the impacts of climate change: increased heat, a longer allergy season, and worsening air quality. High rates of poverty are an additional burden on these kids’ health, she says.

Trump administration dismissive of climate dangers

The new administration has angered environmental and health groups with its proposed slashing of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) budget. The new EPA administrator, Scott Pruitt, has claimed that there is “tremendous disagreement” on whether human behavior has any links to climate change.

The administration has also announced it will significantly roll back the Obama administration’s strict regulations on vehicle tailpipe pollution. Cars and trucks account for about one-fifth of the U.S. global warming emissions.

Last week, Mustafa Ali, the head of the environmental justice program at the EPA, resigned, saying that the new leaders have not given “any indication that they are focused or interested in helping” vulnerable communities, when those should be the agency’s top priority.

That is a view Dr. Bole would concur with: “Children living in poverty are disproportionately impacted by environmental health hazards, and climate change is no different,” she says.

Spring arrived several weeks early in much of the eastern United State this year, and last month was the second hottest on record. An early spring brings the onset of the allergy season, and can also mean the arrival of disease carrying ticks and mosquitos.

“Doctors like myself today are seeing conditions appear outside their typical location and season,” says Dr. Samantha Ahdoot, a pediatrician in Alexandria, Va. Ahdoot recalls patients who have had to start their allergy medications much earlier and miss school because of severe reactions.

Doctors have “obligation” to speak up

The nation’s family doctors, obstetricians and allergists may be well positioned to be the public’s best resource on staying safe from climate impacts. A 2014 Yale national survey found that Americans see their primary care physician as their most trusted source of information on this topic, over organizations like the Center for Disease Control and the World Health Organization.

Molly Rauch is policy director for Moms Clean Air Force, a national organization that advocates for combating climate change and air pollution. She says doctors need to give parents like her the whole picture of how climate is connected to their child’s health.

“Asthma is an epidemic in this country,” says Rauch. “If air pollution makes asthma worse, [parents] want to know about it. And if climate change makes air pollution worse, we actually really need to know about it in order to take care of our children.”

The new Consortium, which includes the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Academy of Family Physicians, and the American Geriatrics Society, among others, will deliver their new report to members of Congress, the Trump administration, and CEOs of Fortune 500 Companies to push for transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable energy.

“We have a moral obligation to act on their behalf,” says Dr. Ahdoot, a member of the Consortium. “Given our current understanding today, failure to take prompt substantive action to reduce emissions would be an unprecedented injustice to every current and future child.”

Smith Statement on President Trump’s Revised Executive Order Restricting Refugees and Visas

Washington D.C. – Congressman Adam Smith released the following statement in response to President Trump’s revised executive order released today:

“President Trump’s latest executive order on refugees and visa restrictions is reckless and runs contrary to America’s founding principles. The President’s second attempt at a travel ban —after his previous order was found to be unconstitutional by two courts—shows a continued disregard for American values and a remarkable willingness to threaten our national security.

“Our existing standards for those seeking refuge already require extremely thorough vetting of all refugees. Banning all refugees and specifically targeting Muslims goes against our values and strengthens extremist groups like ISIS by making America appear anti-Muslim. This malicious executive order will help recruit more terrorists and encourage extremists to attack America, damaging our relationships around the world and making America less safe.”

Congressman Adam is the representative of District 9 in Seattle area. He drew huge crowd last Saturday when he spoke to his constituency at town hall meeting style in South Seattle. He talked similar way in his statement and the crowd erupted with support.

Mayor Murray and King County Executive Constantine on President Trump’s Executive Orders on Immigration!

Mayor Murray and King County Executive Constantine on President Trump’s Executive Orders on Immigration!

SEATTLE (January 25, 2017) – Mayor Ed Murray surrounded by City Council Members, Police Chiefs, and Civil rights activists issued the following statement after President Trump signed executive orders on immigration:

“Today is one of the worst days for immigrants in America since Japanese internment. Just days after hundreds of Seattleites volunteered to support more than 1,000 members of our immigrant community, President Trump sent a message back. He doesn’t respect our values and will exercise his power to threaten immigrants and our federal funding.

“I want to assure Seattle residents that while they are right to be alarmed about President Trump’s divisive vision, they should not be concerned that this City will be bullied into stepping away from its commitments and values. The City of Seattle will continue to protect the rights guaranteed to the City and its people by the United States Constitution and will challenge any unconstitutional policies that threaten the security of our communities.

“We are a nation of laws and we are committed to defending our residents, our values, and the Constitution in the court of law. We will not be intimidated.”

On the other hand, a press release issued by the King County’s Executive Office states, “The administration’s action against immigrants and refugees betrays the fundamental principle that has guided our nation since its inception: that we welcome people who come here fleeing tyranny, fleeing oppression, seeking a better life. We do not build walls. We demand that they be torn down. We do not ask people to show their papers when they report a crime or bring their sick child to a clinic. We do not push children and families into the shadows, and sow fear among our neighbors who may look or speak or pray differently than the majority.

King County proudly upholds the fundamental, self-evident truth announced at our nation’s founding: that all are created equal. We embrace the basic American value that we are a nation of opportunity for all. Immigrants and refugees are welcome here, and our region has acted decisively to become more inclusive, removing barriers to affordable housing, transit, and support to help children.

Now, in this toxic environment, we must do even more. We will offer even greater assistance to community partners providing legal services and immigration assistance. We will increase support and resources to those who can gain citizenship. We will work with local cities and other counties to establish stronger safeguards to protect undocumented immigrants and refugees.

Martin Luther King Jr. County is a place where everyone – regardless of where they started in life – has the opportunity to flourish. Today’s actions by the administration, and those actions we expect are to come, serve only to strengthen our resolve, and draw our community closer.”

Seattle Ordinance Will Mean New Rules for Taxicab and Rideshare Drivers, and Changes in Service for Commuters!

By guest author, Drive Forward

You don’t need to own a car to get around Seattle. Transit options abound, whether you go by trolley or train, boat or bus. And with the proliferation of rideshare services such as Uber, getting from here to there has never been easier.

Ahmed, an Uber driver-partner, regards every passenger as a customer service opportunity. He serves 20 or more customers in his blue Toyota Prius some days. Some want a one-mile ride. Others are in it for the long haul. He looks forward to them all.

“I love my customers, and they’re happy to see me!” he says.

Ahmed is not an Uber employee. He’s an independent contractor who partners with Uber. He owns a small business, and his Prius is his office.

Ahmed, 57, and his wife live in Renton. Their children are grown. His wife runs a home-based business. He likes that he can take time off from his work — minutes, hours, days — to help his wife when needed. He says the Uber platform makes that possible.

“Everybody, when you ask why they drive Uber, they’re going to answer ‘Because of the flexibility,’ ” he says. “I don’t want to lose that flexibility.”

Riders appreciate that flexibility, too. But new rules could hamper the way the current system works.
A Seattle ordinance on collective bargaining (passed last December) will mean new rules for taxicab and rideshare drivers for services such as Uber, and the commuters who use them.

Here are some details about the collective bargaining process, as spelled out in the ordinance:
First, unions (such as Teamsters) or non-profit organizations can apply to be a “Qualified Driver Representative” or QDR. If the QDR is approved by the city, rideshare services such as Uber will have to turn over personal contact information for all drivers so the QDR can contact each driver to solicit support for forming a union.

Next, a group of “qualified drivers” will get to vote whether they want to be represented by the union or have a non-profit represent them, or whether they want to remain independent.
Uber partner Debra says she worries about any collective bargaining agreement that would control the hours she works and in the process eliminate the scheduling flexibility that attracted her to Uber in the first place.

“I don’t have to say no to my family,” she says. “The minute they make us do shifts, I can’t do that anymore.”

Debra says she’s not opposed to unions — in fact she was a union member when she worked as a nurse and a college instructor — but that any attempt to regulate Uber would put her out of a job.

Toni, another partner, credits Uber with allowing her to work on her own terms even as she received chemotherapy treatment from June 2015 until February 2016.

She says any formal contract with the city would “effectively turn us into taxicabs” and kill the industry.

The exact requirements to be a “qualified driver” are still being negotiated, but the ordinance in its present form indicates that only drivers who meet a certain number of trips or hours over the prior four months will get a vote. That would leave many drivers out of the picture.

The upshot: Not all drivers get a vote on whether they want to be represented. If more than 50 percent of qualifying drivers vote in favor of being represented by the union, then the union would represent all drivers — even the drivers who didn’t get to vote or who voted against the union.

Maurice says he was one step away from being homeless when he heard about Uber and became a driver-partner. He says “my security is in my flexibility to run my business the way I choose to run it. With collective bargaining, I’d no longer be able to do that.”

The city is focused on drafting rules for the ordinance, such as what constitutes a “qualified driver.” Implementation of the ordinance is now slated for January 2017.

Drive Forward is a nonprofit organization created by Uber and Eastside for Hire to empower riders, drivers, and community members to raise their voice about issues affecting rideshare, for-hire, and taxi drivers, and the communities they serve.

The Saturday before Thanks Giving Weekend, the East African community came together at Yesler Community Center to Thank Michael Neguse for his service to the community. For the last 16 years, as a community builder Neguse has been working for Seattle Neighborhood Group and has been working to make an impact on our community’s most pressing safety challenges. Seattle Neighborhood Group have a long history of providing assistance to Seattle’s immigrant community in general, and to the East African community in particular. Since 2011, the group have partnered with Seattle Tilth to support a program that allows East African elders to grow food at the Rainier Beach Urban Farm and Wetlands. The elders then take that food back to their families, and to their larger community though congregant meal programs. This program has been life changing for our elder participants. They have decreased their feelings of isolation in their new country, and they have taken on an important provider role in their families and community, all while getting healthy exercise and interacting in English with people of all ages.

The Seattle Neighborhood Group believe that the activities designed and led by Seattle Tilth and the partners in this project will help advance our community’s goals for a sustainable and healthy food system, one that engages people of all backgrounds and all ages.

neguse-2-555

“We are excited about this project because not only will provide low-income residents with regular access to fresh and healthy foods, but it will also empower them to grow food for their families and neighbors, prepare nutritious meals, and engage with others in their community to learn and gain skills they will use for a lifetime.” Said proudly Michael. Neguse will remain in service to the community especially to the youth and elders as long he can breathe and walk. He has big heart for everyone and will always have a big smile on his rounded sunny like face to great with his fellows.

My Take on Trump as a Somali American!

My Take on Trump as a Somali American!

Posted on 11 November 2016 by admin

mohmud-yussuf-facebook-profile-photo-2-174x215

After one of the most bitter and divisive campaigns in US history was concluded November 8, people in the United States including the Somali Americans are in a state of shock and disbelieve. Majority of those who were disappointed are moving to the next step which is watch and see what happens after he resumes the office in January. Donald Trump has made no secret of his agenda of undoing of Obama’s achievements including the Affordable Care Act aka Obama Care. His tone during his speech rallies was not easy to swallow for millions but that was not enough to turn the tide against him and now he is the president elect of the United States of America whether we like it or not.

Somali Americans are one of those groups who worried about their future under Trump administration. Rallies are taking place right after his election in many major US cities including Seattle which has second largest Somalis in the United States. I hear cry and lamentation on the radios, televisions, and social media sites, but not yet confronted one Somali who does such, and the reason maybe be we are used to disappointments. In fact, those few Somalis I have met just days before the election were indifferent who will win and even some were leaning toward Trump. “Oh Wow. Why?” you might say. People accuse Hillary while serving under Obama’s administration for the disaster that had been clouding over many Middle East Countries that have enjoyed peace during Bush administration who was thought worse when he invaded Iraq for no good reason.

Donald Trump has already shown a conciliatory tone during his victory speech and praised Hillary for the service she provided to the nation. Remember, their last public debate, Donald promised to put Hillary in jail if he wins. I am optimistic that Trump has forgiving heart and will bring peace to our suffering people in the Muslim world and jobs and opportunities to all Americans. He is not a liar and unlike Obama and Hillary he speaks straight forward and says out loud what is in his mind. He seems he has a big heart for everyone and as he said “wants the best for every citizen” including us.

Somalis in America have come to the United State to realize the American dream. Actor Barkhad Abdi, Minneapolis Council Member Abdi Warsame, and MN StateSenator Ilhan Omar are great examples for our over achievements in this country. We are accepted for who we are and we should have the confidence that we can achieve even bigger. We should not lose hope on the rhetoric during the campaign. Candidate Trump has also endured so much insults and now he is the most powerful man on earth. I believe we have not lesser skin than those on whom jokes were made. Whatever he said on Somalis during the campaign, should become thing in the past. I have met educated people who told me we, Somali, are the most resilient people on earth when they have seen what has been happening in Somalia time and after.

My fellows, Somali Americans, put aside the fear and move on with the majority Americans. You have endured so much here and home. Now we have the best chance to even farther our interest here and at home with Trump administration. We have to put our eggs in different baskets as they say and ride smoothly with the tide. It is time for us to establish a bigger union among us especially using our younger talented generation to become one of the leading Muslim figures in America. Let the sky be our limit accordingly to our goals and dreams, and that will only happen if we participate actively in business and the politics of this country. GOP is known for strong ethics such as keeping families together and valuing hard work and those are also the values we have known to care so much. Let us congratulate Trump and be part of his journey of Making America Great Again.

A group representing some Seattle Cab Companies delivered yesterday a letter of complaint to the Mayor’s office at Seattle City Hall. “We will be delivering a letter to Mayor Murray,” said Abdul Yusuf and Sam Guled, whose E-Cab Taxi and Flat Rate for Hire vehicles now number over 700 (largest fleet in the North West), “that says, on collective bargaining for taxi and for-hire drivers, and other issues that affect our lives and our incomes, the City is not talking to us.  Eastside and E-Cab recently won the SeaTac Airport Taxi and For Hire contract.

Abdul and Sam said in a press release letter they send also to the local media, the City is not talking to our drivers, or drivers in our industry in general that number over 4,000 Seattle citizens.  The City is not talking to our community leaders.  The City is talking to California-based TNC companies, like Uber and Lyft, and to Teamsters 117, a labor union whose representation has been rejected by most actual taxi and for-hire drivers.  And every day, our drivers pay the price. The Industry of Taxi and For Hire is the back bone of the minority, refugee and immigrant communities in Seattle and we cannot be on the sidelines when our own livelihood is being discussed. We are astonished with the level of disrespect from the mayor’s staff to our industry and our communities during last council hearings on the subject matter. We believe we are the biggest stake holders in the industry and we must be at the table at all time.

The representative of some Seattle Cab/For Hire Companies soon after they delivered their letter

“The letter is signed by our drivers, and our community leaders.  We are tired of the Mayor’s staff telling the Council that they are talking to us, about things like collective bargaining, when in fact they are not.  And we want to put a stop to self-appointed organizations speak for us, instead of listening to us, and working with us.”

Community leaders including African Americans (including Africans) and South Asians, and number of drivers have joined Guled and Yusuf in making the unscheduled presentation to the Mayor at his office in City Hall.
